Wear Your Scarves With Style - Try a Scarf Ring!

In the previous post, we demonstrated Five Simple Ways to Wear a Scarf.  They are the five most basic ways you'll see again and again all over the world.

But maybe you want to do something MORE with your scarves!  Then the scarf ring might be just for you.  It looks like a slightly over-sized life saver candy.  It's made of plastic, and very smooth so as not to snag any of your scarves.

This simple little thing is just $5, and can have all your friends jealous with the pretty ways it will look.  Now you know exactly what to get them for Christmas!

Step 1: Open the scarf so it's wide, and wrap it around your shoulders.  Make sure the ends match up.  Grab each side of the inside edge of the scarf.

Step 2: Take a small amount of the fabric between your fingers, and make little points on each side.  Place them next to each other in one hand.  The technical jargon for these are "pointy dudes."

Step 3: Place the pointy dudes through the center of the scarf ring.

Step 4: Pull both pointy dudes through the scarf ring until you can feel that the tension will hold it firmly in place.  Not all scarves are the same thickness.  A very sheer chiffon scarf will pull much more through the opening.  A thicker weight won't pull as much.

Step 5: Fluff up the two ends so they are full and flower-like.  It will make a little rosette!  You can stop here, and wear your scarf just like this, with the rosette in the center.

Step 6:  Or, you can move the rosette over to one side for an assymetrical look that is very stylish.

Now you have your shoulders covered, and your hands are still free!  It's quite an elegant look.  

Step 7: For an especially elegant and artistic look, put the rosette in the center of your back...

...and then pull the scarf forward to make a cowl-neck drape in the front, like this:

Over a solid color dress or outfit of simple fabric and design, this magically turns it into wearable art.

5 Simple Ways to Wear a Scarf

A scarf can turn mere clothing into an OUTFIT!  Add a scarf to a T-shirt and jeans, and voila!  Outfit.  Add a scarf to a skirt and top, and voila!  Outfit.

Let's take a look at 5 simple ways to accomplish that.  

We're going to take a black skirt and black top - a staple in every woman's wardrobe.  It's quite fine all by itself.  But look how much pizzazz a simple scarf can add to it!

1. Tie the ends and wear it long around your neck.

 We're using a 74" long scarf that's 20" wide.  It's a gorgeous silk chiffon, so very sheer and lightweight.  The black background ties it in beautifully with the black outfit, yet the brightly colored butterflies and flowers create a cheerful vision.  (Don't worry - there's a chance to purchase this one-of-a-kind scarf at the end of this blog).

To accomplish this look, simply tie a knot into each end of the scarf, and put it around your neck.  Let the long ends hang down freely in front.  Easy-peasy!

2.  Loop the scarf once around your neck, and let the ends fall freely on each side.

For this effect, loop the scarf once around your neck, and pull it down a bit so it creates a bit of a drape, like a cowl-neck top.  Then simply let the ends fall freely on each side of the cowl.

One can see more of the scarf with this, since it opens it up more than our first example.  Isn't that a pretty scarf?

3.  Put both ends of the scarf through a loop around your neck.

To achieve this look, before putting the scarf on, fold it in half the long way.  You now have a loop in one hand, and two ends in the other.

Put it behind your neck.  Put the two ends through the loop.  Make it as tight or loose as you wish.

This is a very common way to wear a scarf.  It creates a charming assymetrical look, which is especially nice on top of a solid color, like this black.

4. The Twist!

This effect begins the same way as #3.  Before putting the scarf around your neck, fold it in half length-wise.  Now you have a loop in one hand, and two ends in the other.

Put the scarf around your neck while holding the loop and ends, one in each hand.

Now, rather than putting BOTH ends through the loop, just put ONE end through.  Continue holding the loop.  Let go of the end.

Give the loop a half-twist, so you now have a NEW loop.  Put the second end through this new loop.

This is a particularly pretty look, and it lays flatter against the body than the look of #3.  For a video on how to achieve this, check out our previous blog post.

5.  Wear it as a belt!

Wrap it around your waist and wear it as a belt or sash!  Doesn't it change the mood of this outfit totally?  Simply wrap it around the waist, and make a SINGLE loop to "tie" it closed.

A double loop make a big lump, and isn't very attractive.  A single loop should do the trick.

If the scarf you choose is on the slippery side, you can keep the tie in place with a pin.

 So there you have it!  5 super easy ways to wear a scarf.  Try one or two out, if you haven't worn scarves much in your life.  These 5 ways are the most common ways people wear them.

How To Wear Scarves - part one

A scarf can turn a pair of pants and a top into an OUTFIT.  It can tie the pieces together, and make you look so much more put together.  And it is a super simple way to Beautify Your Self!  Of course, an artisan-made scarf is even better, since it will be as unique as you, too.

Everett, Washington, fabric collector and master seamstress/designer Susie Howell just brought in a new collection for us (since the first batch sold out so fast).

She's a bit of a ham, too, so we had a lot of fun putting this photo together!

Many of our customers don't really know how to wear a scarf, so we're going to give you a few ideas!  You probably don't want to copy Susie up here, so instead, check out this one...

Manya in a double twist tie

This versatile scarf is made from a lovely and soft French cotton that's got a sheer quality to it.  It is very lightweight and comfortable.  The multiple colors make it go with just about anything.  I've paired it here with a black dress.  It is tied with a variation on the most typical scarf tie.  That most typical tie folds the scarf in half so there's a loop at one end, and the two ends at the other end.  Wrap it around your neck and put the two ends through the loop.

Okay!  You are now armed with a tried and true way to wear a scarf!  But wait...there's more!

Look how pretty, and different, that same floral scarf with the black background looks when opened up and thrown across the shoulders as a shawl...

I opened it up and draped it across one shoulder.  One end hangs down the back, and the other down the front.

Doesn't that turn a very plain black dress into a piece of wearable art?  To do this, you must make sure the scarf is wide enough to carry it off.

One benefit of wearing a scarf like this - as opposed to an actual shawl - is that it's not so bulky and full.  You get to see a lot more of the outfit with a scarf.


Take a look at this picture below to get a close-up view of the pattern in this scarf.  And then below that, the full view of the scarf plus an opportunity to purchase it.

The scarf, as mentioned above, is a charming floral print on a very fine and soft cotton.  Susie says the fabric is from France!  You won't be finding it on anyone else nearby!

This next scarf is even more fun!  It's pieced from various black and white knits that Susie cut on the bias.  This lends it some beautiful fluid movement that's very compelling.

It's also an extra-long scarf, meaning there are even more ways to wear it and have some fun.

Here I am in that same black dress, but with the black and white scarf this time.  See how the personality of this scarf makes the entire outfit have a more funky feel?


In this image, I am wearing it in perhaps the most simple way people wear scarves - one loop around the neck with both ends in front.


You can play with this method by making the loop tight and close to the neck, or pulling it down a bit to show more fullness.

In this picture, I'm actually wearing it the exact same way as the above photo.


What's different, you ask?


I have one end a bit shorter than the other.  Because of Susie's clever pieced design, it looks almost like a completely different scarf.  Isn't that fun?

Sometimes we need very bright colors in our life!  Check out this vibrant floral print with so many fun colors in it!

I'm wearing it here with my lime green and coral top.  I've looped it around my neck...

but...

instead of having the ends hang down in front, I flipped them over my shoulders to stay in the back.  Isn't it great how it ties those two bold colors together and makes it an outfit?

If I were wearing a longer skirt, another favorite way to wear a scarf like this is to wrap it around my waist like a sarong.  The chiffon fabric lets the under color of the skirt show through, and looks so pretty and fluttery.

In this picture, I put it on in that simplest of ways - around the neck with both ends hanging down in front.


It just makes you feel like a summer day!

Fiber Art - Thread Scarves by Andi Shannon

A beautiful and unique new scarf style has found its way to MaJe Gallery recently.  Andi Shannon takes threads, ribbon, floss, yarn, and other nifty things and sews them into the most lovely scarves we've seen in a long time!  Check out this example:

To create her unique pieces of art, Shannon lays threads, floss, yarn, ribbon, and other paraphernalia on a dissolvable film.  Another piece of the film gets laid on top.  Then she meticulously stiches it all together with her sewing machine until every piece is locked in place.  Then, she dissolves off the outer layers, and voila!  We get to see these amazing scarves!  Here's an example of her machine sewing a scarf with the dissolvable film still on.

Shannon has an excellent goal for her art: "My goal is to create art that delights the eye, inspires the mind, and encourages the soul."  We think she's done it!

Some of Shannon's thread scarves have a lace-like quality to them.  Take the black one above for example.  Very lacy and oh so very pretty!
